RE: The 454 is out of the MH

Good luck! My '92 HR is a P-30 also, but says that engine removal is through the driver door (yes, after the seat and steering column is removed...).

RE: motorhome versus travel trailer

We've done both TT and Class A, and for our situation we much prefer the motor home. I like riding high and my family REALLY enjoys the rolling potty breaks or the quick trip to the ice box for refreshments and snacks. We are 2 adults, 2 teens and a full sized Akita that occupies a fair amount of real estate. Everyone has plenty of room in transit for them to do their own thing be it in the co-pilot seat, on a couch, lounge chair or at the kitchen table.
When I get to where I'm going, I very much like the ability to pull into my spot, drop the jacks and roll out the carpet and awning -- done. I appreciate it even more when it's cold and raining outside! Hit the generator switch and make a fast pot of coffee for that fast warm up and never have to exit the coach. :B
My 5er buddy and his wife on the other hand spend more time jockeying the rig, blocking tires, manually leveling it up and dragging stuff outside. Then he has to fuss with his Honda generator and extension cords...and then there's the gas. Regardless of all that, they still seem to love it -- but I still like my way much better. :w
So get whatever meets your needs the best. Decide what you would like to have and what you HAVE to have. There's some good information in all the above posts. If cost is your major driver, there are some great values out there in the used market.
Good Luck,

Just how many tire shop's have you seen torque lug nuts on a large truck or MH???
Last weekend when I took my coach to a local tire shop. I didn't even have to ask either...;)

RE: Slowing down

The head guy for Shell said today that the problem was that we drive too much, going to have to stop driving as much as we do.:S
Ahhh yes, from the company who had over $27 Billion in *profit* alone last year? Yeah, we drive too much...sheesh! :R

RE: 454 max RPM Redline number?

I try not to go beyond 3500 RPM on my '92 454. I've twisted it once to 4200 coming downhill on a 6% grade and pulled the tranny into 1st when my brakes got soft.

RE: National Speed Limits?? NO WAY

The only oil shortage is in the minds of the oil future traders. The only way Feds can impose a federal speed limit is thru highway funds, not by any law. Speed limits are a responsibility of each states legislature and have a lot to do with environment, population and road conditions. IMHO should stay that way. 55 MPH is not a reasonable speed for a modern passenger car on an Interstate highway in Wyoming. Most posting here probably drive at a speed that fits their personal situation and don't need me or anyone else to tell them what speed they should be driving. Personally I set my cruise control on 62 MPH and feel that is the best speed for my travels. If I wanted to save some money on gas I would probably slow down a little too, but I don't want someone in Washington deciding that for me.
Best post so far...thanks for the injection of sanity Rod. :D
Oil speculators and a weak dollar have driven the prices of oil up...it's not about a tight supply. I agree with the crowd that believes that the speed limits are fine the way they are, and that we don't need additional Federal or State tinkering. If you want to save fuel drive slower than the posted limit. If you have deep pockets, or are simple time constrained, then by all means drive up to the lawful speed limit for your particular situation.

RE: Another push for CB Channel 13

Wouldn’t a better cause be for RVers to have a cell number posted *and* readable on their rigs for emergency contact? Seems that’s a far better solution using today’s modern technology vice convincing everyone that they still need buggy whips. :W
I think I will pass on advertising my phone number on the highways and byways across the country. You might want to rethink this idea. :B
Why Beemer, are you that paranoid? I know people that have driven around for 30 some odd years with their names and phone numbers on magnetic signs plastered on the side of their vehicles. Their incidents of phone harassment (read crank calls) or crime wasn't any worse than someone that that didn't "advertise" information. The point was that the common cell phone has way more utility and is certainly more pedestrian than a CB. It makes more sense to exploit that fact rather than attempt to resurrect a dinosaur.
Now I didn't share this in my earlier post, but I already do this. I tack a sign in the driver's side bedroom window that has my emergency contact information on it. It's been there for three years now and I haven't had any crank calls, no Bogey men have attempted to abduct my family and my belongings are still intact. I suppose that the vast majority of people out there are still good.
But I submit that that everyone is different and my methods might not be the right choice for everyone.
Just my $.02,
*As a side benefit, I put that sign in the front window when we're out and about and the dog is left in the coach. We're just a phone call away... :C

RE: Avi Resort & Casino - Laughlin

I know people that have stayed at AVI and liked it just fine. Very reasonable prices and plenty of space in the RV spaces, but they are located across the street. They have shuttle service to and from the casino that runs 24/7 though.
I think more people choose Riverside because you can walk or take the water taxis to most all other casinos on the river. AVI is so far away from the rest of Laughlin...

RE: Another push for CB Channel 13

Ahh yes, the old “Why don’t people use their CBs anymore” post.
Yes, I still have a CB installed in my coach, but frankly I don't bother to turn it on these days. My experience is that it’s still a great tool for truckers, but most of the “conversations” on channel 19 weren’t intended for me. Channel 13 was a just a great void with nobody usually home. Over the years I discovered that I'd much rather listen to clear, crisp digital music than trucker static and squelch during a long ride. More importantly the DW does too! The truth be known, I’ve actually been considering taking the CB out. But after reading the posts in this thread actually made me re-evaluate the whole CB argument again, and would I be better served just leaving it in place.
When I weigh the positive and negative aspects of keeping my CB installed I still conclude that the whole CB argument for RVs just doesn't make sense anymore. The space it occupies for the features it provides can be better used by updated equipment. I reason that between my Blackberry (for communication and information), plus my onboard GPS with traffic information service, and a PC with wireless aircard… what can a CB provide over those things? The answer I came up with is absolutely nothing. Now someone is sure to throw out the proverbial “bear alerts”, but I don’t do 30MPH over the posted speed limit anymore – and certainly not in my motor home!
Lastly, the vehicle to vehicle argument is as much a valid argument today as it was almost 40 years back. In fact someone above made a comment above about how a trucker raised him on his CB when a tire went flat on his 5er/trailer, actually saved him from major damage. But when you examine his example you see that he needed a trucker to spot the problem; luckily they were on the same CB channel in order to pass that information. I wonder how many people saw that bad tire, but didn’t have a CB – only a cell phone. Practically everyone has a cell phone these days.

RE: RV "break-ins" at state parks and campgrounds????

Edit...
A friend of mine here didn't have a break in, just a bucket and funnel that was outside stolen last year. Maybe $5 of stuff total. A couple days later I happened to see that same bucket and funnel being used by another camper in the park to fill 1 gallon water jugs... --cut
... You see, that same exact bucket and funnel was used to empty a port a potty a couple times a week for at least 6 months previously.
That's excellent!!! :)

RE: Hydraulic or Air Level. Which Do You Use?

I have hydraulic system and have been very pleased with it. I have had to replace a fitting on the main control box, but hey, it's a '92! Not bad for 16 years of service.
Likes: Trouble free, efficient and the operational longevity speaks volumes.
Dislikes: When doing preventative maintenance coming in contact with ATF, a very minor inconvenience I know, but I still dislike it.

RE: TV Converter Box Program

Has anyone determined if any of the converters have an external wall-wart power supply and the power connection could be replaced that would allow you to power it directly from 12 volts instead?
I suppose you could get a cheap couple hundred watt inverter to power it if you really wanted to.

RE: TV Converter Box Program

Yes, your rabbit ear or bat wing antenna will be fine. The box will do the digital/analog conversion and pass a nice clean signal to your TV (channel control will be done with the new box).

Boy am I glad I do not live in California..But I supose that if we out of Staters drive through that wonderful sate that thsy could stop us and test our units/
Well you can stand by because the rest of the US seems to follow CA on most things environmental, and fuel leaks would qualify. Give it a few years and you'll be right there with us...

RE: Tag axles brakes v non tags

Unless I am wrong, Tags are usually added to increase the GVRW of the coach. So if you take the 16,000LB chassis above, add a tag and rerate the chassis for 19,000LB, you need more brake to stop the additional weight. So IMHO with a tag with brakes, the stopping distance would be about the same as the weight has increased.
I would agree that the braking would be equal if the tag equipped RV was loaded to 19K lbs. However, if it is loaded below that 19K lbs limit, then you would expect the tag equipped RV to provide better braking performance over the non-tag RV.
